PlayStation 2 Game Not a Sequel

Sony urges consumers to remain calm

    By Charles London

The console world is reeling this morning from news that Smuggler's Run, a PlayStation 2 title developed by Angel Studios, is not a sequel or remake of a previous title.

"So it's called Smuggler's Run," commented PlayStation 2 owner Jeremy Keith, 12. "What I don't understand is why there isn't a number after the title, like 2 or 3, or at least an 'Alpha' or an 'EX', like Street Fighter."

"What's its real name?" demanded Ken Schaefer, 11. "Smuggler's Run Tag Tournament? Smuggler's Run EX Special Edition Turbo IX?"

A Sony spokesperson today explained that the game is what Sony refers to as "new."

"It's nothing to worry about," said Sandra Greene, public relations representative, Sony Computer Entertainment, who urged gamers not to panic. Greene claims that "new" games are actually not unknown to the industry.

"We're on Final Fantasy IX now, right?" explained Greene. "Well, if you work your way back through the series, you'll find you count down all the way to a Final Fantasy that doesn't have a Roman numeral. Because it was the first one. See, at some point many years, ago, it was a 'new' game."

This has been causing a lot of confusion amongst the gaming public.

"Well, ok, if it's not a sequel then it must be remake," said Ken Schaefer. "Like when Hasbro remakes games from the 1950s like Frogger with 3D graphics."

Not quite, according to Greene. Greene explained that this is Angel Studios' first game for the PlayStation 2. Greene said that previously, they had developed two PC games for Microsoft: Midtown Madness and Midtown Madness 2. Both are driving games that Angel Studios says really helped them to refine their game formula in preparation for Smuggler's Run.

"Oh, it's a port," responded Keith when presented with the information. "Why the hell didn't you say so?"
